A paper which addresses two complementary topics, the nature of the impact of railway fatalities on rail employees and interventions to prevent and reduce the negative impact. The paper is based on the results of a qualitative analysis of 40 retrospective interviews with conductors and engineers involved in a railway fatality in Canada, as well as an extensive literature review. The authors present a model to reduce potentially traumatic reactions after a critical incident.
