The aim of this paper is to describe the method to develop the normative model of the Safety Case Process in a formal way. In order to reach this objective, various commonly used description technologies to describe processes were examined and evaluated against this specific application background. In the end, Event Driven Process Chains (EPCs) were discovered to be the appropriate description technique to reach this aim.

This paper reviews three serious US accidents between 2002 – 2009 involving freight trains, passenger trains and a metropolitan subway. In all three cases investigators found that the use of cell phones or text messaging contributed to the accidents. Next the paper examines the policies and practices as well as the challenges of ensuring compliance.

Collisions with road vehicles figures large in the risk profile of most railways. However, the casualty rates at level crossings differ significantly jurisdiction by jurisdiction. This paper looks at the opportunities for enhancing the configuration of level crossings and the costs associated with upgrades using examples from around the world to identify opportunities to cost-effectively reduce risk.

The railway and road transport sub-systems are complementary but different in the way they are organized and managed. The railway sub-system has a centralized operation compared to the loosely operated road transport sub-system, in which individuals interact. With greater emphasis on integration among transport modes through inter-modal and multi-modal models, there are a number of aspects that need to be analyzed and discussed in order to find a way to harmonize safety aspects between different transport modes.

This paper presents a study of the harmful effects of ground borne vibration induced by high speed trains. A model has been designed using ANSYS software to evaluate and predict nearby building damage. A comparison has been conducted between predicted and real peak particle velocity inside the building. To excite the structure model, sample inputs for peak particle velocity are chosen from recommendations by ISO14837-1 standard. Frequency analysis of the output data of the software and comparing such output with ISO14837-1 standard predicts some harmful effects. In order to reduce harmful effects, mechanical dampers were added to the structure model.
