The safety of children in the vicinity of railways is a concern to parents, carers and teachers worldwide. Modern trains are fast and very quiet and their approach is often not noticed until the last moment. Other hazards include high voltage overhead lines or rails providing traction power, unsafe structures and level crossings.
This page provides links to safety resources, lesson material and videos prepared by railway companies for their own safety education programmes.
CAUTION – before using any of these resources you should check/view them to ensure that (i) they are age appropriate for the children you are teaching and (ii) any specific information (for example on how level crossings work) is accurate for your local railway. If in any doubt you are advised to contact your local railway operator who will be able to provide advice and further resources.
