This paper describes a method for assessing the opportunities for human error in signalling centres using an approach based upon the established techniques of Task Analysis and Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA). The method allows systematic identification of signaller errors in the future signalling operation, the derivation of consequences for safety or operational performance of the system, and the influence of different protection measures to be considered.
